The Security and Risk Analysis minor is intended to familiarize students with the general framework and multidisciplinary theories that define security and related risk analysis. Course work will engage students in the challenges and problems of assuring information confidentiality and integrity, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of various methods for assessing and mitigating associated risk in the student’s major field.
The minor provides a grounding in analysis and modeling used in information search, visualization and creative problem solving. This knowledge is set in the context of legal, ethical and regulatory issues of security including analysis of privacy and security law, internal control standards, regulatory policies and basic investigative processes and principles. Such understanding overviews the information technology that plays a critical role in identifying, preventing and responding to security-related events in the student's major field.
Program requirements and additional details can be found on the University Bulletin.
Limitations of the SRA minor
For those with degrees in the College of IST, required courses can often be used to satisfy some requirements for a minor also within the College of IST. However, University Policy requires a minor to have at least six credits that are unique from the prescribed courses of the major. Therefore, students in the Cybersecurity major have explicit requirements for completing the SRA minor.
Cybersecurity students will need to take two of the following courses to earn the SRA minor:
IST 140 or CMPSC 101
SRA 421
SRA 468
SRA 471
SRA 480
IST 452
IST 453
