Haynes has been with the College of IST since 2000. He helped design much of IST’s Application Design and Development undergraduate option and his teaching focuses in this area. He has also taught courses in human-computer interaction, digital entrepreneurship, the IST capstone writing course, and design as a research methodology (graduate). He recently received the George McMurtry Excellence in Teaching and Learning Award in IST. He works extensively with both undergraduate and graduate students on the design and development of useful and usable software applications.
Prior to academia, Haynes worked at a number of technology companies in the United States and Europe including Apple Computer, Adobe Systems, and several software startup companies. In industry he worked as an application software developer, system architect, software development project manager, and application development group manager.
Haynes' research interests include the design and evaluation of information technologies; design as a research method; design rationale; technology in healthcare; scenario-based methods; and human-centered design. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the United States Department of Agriculture, the Office of Naval Research, the United States Marine Corps, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, as well as other government agencies, and organizations in private and public industry.
His work has been published in leading journals and conference proceedings including: ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction, International Journal of Human-Computer Studies, Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, AI Magazine, Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, IEEE International Conference on Healthcare Informatics, International Conference on Information Systems, among others.
